Helen Renold
Helen Savari Renold is singer, composer, recording artist, teacher and president of the jazzaar association in Aarau, Switzerland.
Early years
Helen Savari Renold was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With her Sister Irene, they founded the duo Cenderawasih which was signed to EMI in 1984. At a very early age they began with music lessons covering classical piano, popular guitar and operatic vocal training that soon allowed them to arrange and perform their own compositions and cover tunes from any style or genre. Personally managed by their mother, they began singing locally and got immediate attention by local media, which consequently lead to a nationwide appearance in clubs, hotels and on national and local TV stations. Their three albums received high acclaim among the Malaysian public awarding them with gold sales for the record company. The Cenderawasih duo became one of Malaysia’s most popular Pop Duo.
In 1986 the sisters decided take a break from the fame and glamor at home to go to America to enhance their musical knowledge in the area of Arranging and Composition at the Berklee College of Music.
While studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston during the day, both sisters thrived by performing in the suburbs’ club circuits in the evenings gaining once again a following of fans. They were awarded with several scholarships at the college and graduated in 1988 with Bachelors in the Performing Arts. Helen received a Bachelor in Jazz Composition. During the Berklee years they flew back to Malaysia to record their third album. Helen and Irene also appeared on several festivals in the greater Massachussets area. During their Boston days they gained much opportunity to network and collaborate with other musicians of diverse cultural heritages. After graduation Helen married Fritz Renold whom she met at Berklee and decided to move to his home in Switzerland.
Upon their arrival in Switzerland they founded the company Shanti Music Productions Renold & Co. which was first registered in the state of Massachusetts by Fritz in 1989. They developed the unique concept of Bandstand Learning with Role Models™. The family grew with the birth of Lydia in 1992, Benjamin in 1993 and Sharon in 1996. All kids are now active in the music scene and perform in either the Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra or in other projects developed by Shanti Music Productions.
Besides the dedicated life for the Children, Helen appeared on stage every now and then with many illustrious jazz musicians such as Herb Pomeroy, Adam Nussbaum, Christian Jacob, Mike Richmond, Tommy Campbell, Bobby Watson, Jeff Brillinger, Franco Ambrosetti, Jerry Bergonzi, Buster Williams, Carl Allan, Adi Yeshaya, Shelley Carroll, Chris Albert, Randy Brecker, Steven Bernstein, Willie Murillo, Donny McCaslin, Tommy Smith, Bernd Konrad, Dave Taylor, Miroslav Vitous, Jamshied Sharifi, Vincent Gardner, John LaPorta and many more. Helen co-produced many of events with the Jazzaar Association, which she presides since 2008. She had collaborated with her husband in many compositional projects or co-produced events in Thailand, Malaysia and other countries. In 2003 she wrote the narration to a Jazz Suite entitled Euphrates & Tigris Suite. In 2005 the couple recorded their first album together entitled the “CUBE” that features the music of Fritz and the Lyrics of Helen Renold with an all Star line up. The album received pre-nomination in 7 categories for the Grammy. In 2006 Helen was the featured singer for a production called Beatles in Salsa together with Tony Hayes. For the 2010 India Fusion night Helen wrote the music to a song where her mother also contributed with original lyrics.
Helen continued to pursue further education in adult training and acquired the qualifications as an expert in curriculum design. Today, together with Fritz and their team they are in the midst of developing their online educational system.
